  • Research summary

The title of the research project is a cross sectional study assessing patient perception of blood pressure on anti-hypertensive medication adherence.
This is an important research question as although many blood pressure lowering treatments have been shown to be effective in trials all ethnic groups, in reality the low compliance has led to the treatment to appear as if inefficient and not effective. Among other factors like age or number of medications being used, patient perception is an important determinant of adherence to blood pressure lowering medication which further determines the severity and course of disease outcome. This study will provide an insight into perception of the stage 1 hypertensive patients and their respective adherence to medication and the contribution of additional factors (clinical and demographic). It will give an understanding of which factors predominantly effect adherence and could be addressed to improve adherence. Thereby, the study design is a analytical cross sectional study. The study will be funded by Imperial College London (as an MSc student)and the hypertension clinic is located in St. George's hospital. The study will last for at least 3 months in order to collect data of 136 patients. The stage 1 hypertensive patients will require to give 30 minutes of their time to fill out 2 questionnaires (illness perception questionnaire revised hypertension - IPQ-R hyper, and morisky medicine adherence scale hypertension 8 - MMAS-8 hyper).
