Research summary
Stroke is one of the leading preventable causes of death and disability internationally. Access to high-quality emergency and acute stroke care has been demonstrated to decrease mortality and to improve patient outcomes, including reducing disability after stroke. Delay in recognition of stroke warning signs and in seeking medical attention contribute to treatment delay. Knowledge of stroke risk factors and warning signs in the general public is poor. Studies suggest that knowledge greatly improves the speed of response to stroke of members of the public, thus increasing potential treatment options and enabling better outcomes after stroke.
To date we do not know how people who have experienced stroke understand the range of signs and symptoms of stroke. It is thought that their experiences would inform their knowledge, but we do not know to what extent, and if their knowledge is limited to the symptoms and treatment they themselves had.
The aim of this work is to a survey a population of people who have had a stroke, to establish their knowledge of risk factors and warning signs for stroke, and to identify factors contributing to any delay in seeking medical attention, and if their understanding of stroke has been effected by their experience of stroke.REC name
