  • Research summary

People living with dementia and their carers need access to good quality and timely care and support. The STRiDE England project study has two aims. First, it aims to understand how the way dementia care is organised in England today affects the experiences of people living with dementia and their families. We are particularly interested in the experiences of people who may experience difficulties in accessing and using dementia care, for example because of their ethnicity or religion or of where they live. Second, we want to explore how dementia policies can be improved to better support people with dementia and their family carers.

We will analyse documents that describe how dementia care is organised in England and how it is supposed to be provided across the country. Then we will speak with people living with dementia and carers living in four different areas in England to hear their current experiences of getting support, care and treatment. We will also ask them how they think dementia care could be improved in the future. We will then speak with professionals involved in dementia care to hear what they think could be improved in dementia care.

We will then bring together the information we have gathered about policies, what we have learned about the experiences of people living with dementia and carers, and the views of professionals. We will produce a plan (a ‘roadmap’) on how to improve care and support for people living with dementia and carers by making recommendations for change at both local and national levels. We will also identify the areas where more research may be needed.

We have organised our research activities in six work streams (WSs). This application refers to WS4 – Interviews with people living with dementia and family carers to map individual care and support experiences.
