  • Research summary

This research is about Understanding stress in mental health staff. It originally occurred to us when most of the staff who have regular patient interactions and come across acutely ill mental health patients in their work place have over the months or years built up stress to a point where they have had to take time off work and this in turn will have an adverse effect on their finances, health and well being of themselves and their family. This study will identify the areas of stress and also what is already available in the health board to support the staff in these situations and what can be added to improve the support. It is also evident that although there is a good support system in the health board there have been some aspects that could be identified to help the staff stay at work and also be able to manage well in these crucial times.
This study is primarily focused on all the mental health staff who have patient interactions, staff such as: All the doctors, nursing managers, staff nurses, Crisis Nurse Practitioners, nursing assistants, Community Psychiatric Nurses, Social workers and Care coordinators. If there are other staff who have interactions with patients will be invited to take part in the study too. Cwm Taf Morgannwg health board mental health staff working in wards, outpatients, in Community Mental Health Team, occupation therapy, Liaison services and psychologist and psychotherapist will be invited to the study. The study will be a survey that will be sent to all the managers in every mental health team, it will run for duration of 6 to 8 weeks. There is no medications, interventions, investigations or invasive procedures involved. It is based on survey questionnaire specifically tailored to mental stress, health and well being of the staff.
