Research summary
This is a very early prevention public health project. A Pilot study in 2013 showed that a community led network of social support and health education for local new mothers was feasible, acceptable, and led to significant changes in maternal mental health and social capital. Building on this pilot work, we will in this study enlarge a community led network of social support and health education for local new mothers, in collaboration with community services, and examine also infant outcomes. The expected changes are improvements in maternal social capital, mental health and health literacy, and thereby improvements parenting, child health and developmental outcomes. Outcomes of the project will be assessed with quantitative measures, and in addition we will assess qualitatively perceived obstacles and facilitators in the project. Women in pregnancy attending midwifery clinics will be invited to join the project, taking part in evaluation of both parental and child outcomes, and comparison will be made with a similar group not receiving the intervention.
