Research summary
Pressure continues to grow on Emergency Departments (EDs) in the United Kingdom, with declining performance and adverse effects on patient outcome, safety and experience. One proposed solution is stream and redirect adult patients with minor injury/illness away from the ED (directing them to other care such as GP appointments, Minor Injury Units). A new urgent care self-service tool is being piloted in a number of NHS Trusts across the UK in order to do so.
This study uses interviews and a survey to evaluate the impact of the new urgent care self-service tool on patients and healthcare professionals working in EDs. The objectives of this project are:
1.To investigate patient experiences of being redirected for care after attending the ED during the implementation of the urgent care self-service tool
2.To investigate staff experiences of redirecting patients away from the ED for alternative care during the implementation of the urgent care self-service toolInterviews will be undertaken with up to 30 patients and 20 staff. Where patients do not have capacity to consent, the person attending with them (family member/carer) will be offered an interview.
