  • Research summary

This research aims to find out about and share people’s experiences of attending a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Trans (LGBT) support group. The group is located in a secure service for people with learning disabilities who are accommodated there due to offending behaviour.

The chief investigator will use a participatory approach; this means she will give the people taking part in the study some control over the course of the research. The term co-researchers is used to refer to people taking part in the study instead of participants in order to reflect this approach and recognize their key role in the research. There are five roles in the research briefly summarised below:
Group Member: Person who attends the LGBT group, they have been consulted about the planning of the research. Some group members may become co-researchers if they wish but not all will, data will not be collected from group members unless they become co-researchers.
Co-researcher: Person who gives consent to participate in the research, they will provide data, be asked how they want the data to be used and be consulted regarding the analysis. They will not have access to primary data other than their own.
Chief investigator: Liz Tallentire, who will be responsible for planning and coordinating the research, collecting data, analysis and dissemination.
Field Contact: Paul Withers, who will coordinate contact with group members and/or co-researchers. He will not have access to primary data.
Academic Supervisor: Ian Smith, who will advise on research methodology, including design, data collection, analysis and dissemination. He will have access to some primary data as necessary to support this process.

Data will be collected using interviews, over a period of approximately 4 months. Data will be analysed using narrative methods, which consider both individual stories and themes in the stories.
