  • Research summary

A stoma is an opening in the skin where part of the intestine has been brought to the surface and its contents collected in an external bag. This may be used for the treatment of many different diseases, such as bowel cancer. Patients who have an operation to create a stoma have to wear the external bag 24 hours a day, and need to empty and/or change the bag several times a day. Having a stoma is a dramatic change to the appearance and function of the body, and some patients find it difficult to adapt, both physically and emotionally. It is important to find out which personal and medical factors may mean that someone’s quality of life is affected. If these can be found, extra help can be given to vulnerable patient groups.
This study is going to use a questionnaire to ask about: the patient (gender, age etc), their stoma (how long they have had it etc), their general quality of life and also their quality of life specifically related to the stoma. The questionnaire will be anonymous, so no identifiable information or personal contact details will be required. The questionnaire will be sent by post to stoma patients registered with Good Hope Hospital. An online version will also be created and posted in selected UK based online stoma support organisations.
