  • Data collection arrangements

Samples and data are collected from individuals attending clinics for investigations into their heart (cardiovascular) or lung (respiratory) health, and those with, or at risk of infections. We also collect samples from patients who are admitted to hospital. The research tissue bank stores samples within a secure repository and data from clinical records, and any additional tests people may agree to as part of the project, within a secure database. These data and samples create a valuable resource for researchers to investigate a wide range of research questions about heart and lung diseases. We also collect samples and data from healthy volunteers for comparison.

  • Research programme

Research will include basic science, translational and clinical research, with work spanning across several clinical fields that are integrated within the Sheffield NIHR Biomedical Research Centre. The focus of the bank on cardiovascular disease and pulmonary hypertension will continue. Work will also continue on infectious disorders, including responses to viral illness and vaccination. STH and University of Sheffield researchers played a significant role in the COVID-19 pandemic, notably via sequencing of viral RNA and assessment of immune responses. We will expand our cardiovascular research to include cerebrovascular disease, a closely related and important field. The work on infectious diseases will expand to obtain samples from patients with haematological and immunological disorders, who may have abnormal immune responses and be at higher risk of infection.
