Research summary
Why?
A Morton's neuroma is a benign overgrowth of nerve tissue in the foot. We currently use steroids and local anesthetic to treat Morton's neuromas as a first-line treatment and are quoted to have a positive response rate of 90%. However, We don't have an understanding of the pathophysiology of this treatment and we don't currently know what happens to the neuroma after it is injected.
What?
Normal practice is to inject 40mg of Kenalog (steroid) and 0.25% Chirocaine (anesthetic) mixed together under ultrasound scan guidance by a radiologist. This would be performed at the Leicester General Hospital – NHS Trust which is under the umbrella of University Hospitals Leicester.
Who?
Any patients with a new diagnosis of Morton's neuroma would be eligible for this study. This would have to be diagnosed on the ultrasound scan that is routinely requested when suspecting this condition.
How long?
This study will last until 30 eligible participants have been recruited
