Research summary
Peripheral arterial disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. 20% (1 in 5) people between the ages of 55 and 75 years have peripheral arterial disease. Current first-line non-invasive diagnostics used to diagnose peripheral arterial disease are primarily based on the Ankle-Brachial Pressure Indices (ABPI). However, a recent survey found that the majority of general practitioners do not use ABPI to assess and decide on further management.
We intend to develop or identify the best tool for detecting peripheral arterial disease, predicting its progression and its outcome. This will allow a more evidence based approach for the management of peripheral arterial disease.
Tests used in this study are safe and have been used on humans in other studies. Participants of the study will have the right to refuse or withdraw from the study at any stage. Though there may be no direct benefit to them directly, we foresee future benefits to the general population. All participants will receive the same line of investigation unless it is not deemed safe for them.
