  • Research summary

Falls in older people are a major public health issue worldwide, with 1 in 3 people aged 65 and over falling each year. This impact will grow substantially in the near future due to the increased ageing population. There is an increasing interest and need to support fall prevention self-management programs with technological tools.

Standing Tall is an unsupervised, home-based exercise programme delivered through a tablet device or a computer. It offers a low-cost, home-based solution with a simple user-interface that incorporates physical and behavioural elements designed to promote compliance. The effectiveness of the Standing Tall program in reducing fall risk in older people has been provided with a large, high-quality clinical trial.
Standing Tall is particularly appropriate for older people living in the community who prefer to exercise in their own home or are unable to access community-based exercise classes.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the proposed model for implementing the Standing Tall programme into usual care practices throughout health, leisure service providers and charities in the North of England. We aim to recruit up to 400 participants across the North West Coast, the North East and North Cumbria, Greater Manchester and Yorkshire and Humber. Participants will use the Standing Tall app supported by local health services, council, charities, private sector organisations. Participants and services will complete questionnaires and interviews about the use of the Standing Tall application. The Study is funded by the NATIONAL HEALTH AND MEDICAL RESEARCH COUNCIL (NHMRC, Australia) partnership project grant.
