Research summary
Research shows that reducing the time we spend sitting can reduce the risks of many disease and improve health. Improvements in health may be gained by simple altering time spent sitting with time spent standing or in light-intensity walking. However, little is known about the role of sitting time in older adults. In addition, measurement tools such as activity monitors ( which are worn around the waist and measure how much you move)that estimate sitting and physical activity, have been developed and tested in younger adults. therefore , it is highly like that data from these activity monitors that are used to assess sitting time and physical activity are not appropriate for use in older adults.
the aim of this study to improve the way we measure sitting time and moderate-intensity physical activity in older adults. this will be achieved by measuring posture and the amount of energy used by individuals, in the form of calories, whilst undertaking different types of physical activities and sitting behaviours that replicate common daily tasks. This will help to refine the current activity monitor information and how we estimate different intensities of activity by developing accurate data for sitting time and physical activity in older adults within the UK.
