  • Research summary

This study will use interviews to seek early intervention in psychosis service staff perspectives on their experiences of participating in the 2023 Voyage to Recovery project. The project involved nine teams of young adults with a history of psychosis taking part in week-long sailing journeys alongside staff from early intervention in psychosis services. This study is interested in staff members’ insights into what participation in the project was like for clients from each early intervention in psychosis service, and for each service as a whole, as well as their reflections on their own experiences of the journey.

Although the perspectives of young people who participated in previous years’ Voyage to Recovery journeys have been looked at by existing studies, no other study has yet considered the Voyage to Recovery project from the perspectives of multiple staff members who participated in the journeys. This broader perspective may provide a better understanding of the benefits and risks that arise for services participating in such projects, as well as any barriers that services might face. Interviews may also yield information about how services, clients, and staff can prepare for participating in the journeys, as well as how they might prepare for their return home. Some of the insights may also be relevant to other adventure therapy interventions, and to outdoor approaches to supporting mental health more broadly.

The study will take place from the Autumn of 2023, and will aim to interview one member of staff who participated in the 2023 Voyage to Recovery from each early intervention in psychosis service that took part. The interviews will last up to two hours and will be carried out online. Staff will be asked broad questions about their experience and reflections on the journey, but the interview will not follow a rigid schedule.
