  • Data collection arrangements

The endocarditis research registry is to record the epidemiological, demographic, microbiological, surgical and outcome data in our cohort of endocarditis patients.
The data will be collected from clinical databases during hospital admission for treatment of endocarditis. Some information regarding background status may need to be collected from the GP and the patients will be specifically consented to allow the research team to contact the GP and any other medical team as appropriate. Similarly, some patients are routinely discharged to other hospitals in order to complete courses of antibiotics or for rehabilitation and we will gain consent from patients to approach these teams. At follow up outpatient clinic, we will collect data on life status, disability, sequelae and complications as well as echocardiographic data.
The data will be held on a server within Barts Health NHS Trust. The software platform will be IWEB (supplied by Dendrite Clinical Systems). The server is protected by the Barts firewall and also requires a username and password to access. This software is used to create databases for audit purposes for many cardiac and cardiothoracic services including national audits (i.e. MINAP) and is robust and approved by the Barts Hospital ICT team.

  • Research programme

This database will support the investigation of treatments for the management of infective endocarditis, a life threatening infection of the heart valves. It will measure baseline characteristics, including mortality, length of stay, infecting organisms etc. It will allow us to develop new ideas to manage the disease process and develop plans for trials to improve outcomes.
