Research summary
Parental substance misuse has harmful impacts on children, proving to be a prevalent and major child protection and public health concern. Despite the widespread impacts of parental substance misuse, it is important to recognise that not all children who are exposed to parental substance misuse subsequently develop social, emotional or behavioural problems. These children may be referred to as resilient. Viewing resilience as flexible and adaptable facilitates an opportunity for intervening among young people who are affected by parental substance misuse. Currently, there is no established evidence-based intervention to promote resilience among young people whose parents misuse substances. Therefore, this study aims to co-produce an intervention to promote social and emotional resilience in young people affected by parental substance misuse. This will be achieved through carrying out a qualitative systematic review of young people’s experiences of parental substance misuse, as well as exploring young people’s experiences of and possible resilience to parental substance misuse with in-depth interviews. Finally, these findings will be combined to form the basis for discussions in co-production workshops with key stakeholders, to develop an early prototype intervention which can help inform practice and policy.
