Research summary
The aim of this study is to determine for the first time the proportions and severity of injury to the limbs and pelvis of children of school age (5-18 years) resulting from sports. While there have been a number of studies published that focus on injuries from particular sports, no study has looked at injuries from all sports in school aged children for a full year in the same centre. Such a study would allow us to determine which sports were associated with the highest risk of injury, and which sports caused the most serious injuries as defined by the need for an operation. It would also highlight the particular types of injuries associated with different sports, which could enable protective equipment to be introduced to reduce the risk of those injuries during training.
