Research summary
Thyroid nodules are very common within the population. Only a small percentage is cancerous. The difficulty at present is differentiating those that are cancerous from those which are not using imaging. Diagnostic criteria using ultrasound exist and are routinely used. Nodules which fall into the U3-5 (indeterminate-malignant) categories require a needle test (fine needle aspirate) for diagnosis. This test may also be inconclusive and have to be repeated. This study will look at measurements of blood flow within thyroid nodules using spectral Doppler ultrasound. The patient will receive the normal accepted standardised investigations and treatment. In addition a few additional measurements will be taken using ultrasound during the normal outpatient appointment. This data will subsequently be analysed to establish if there is any correlation between the blood flow measurements and the likelihood of cancer.
