  • Data collection arrangements

Brain donations (including a small part of spinal cord and cerebrospinal fluid) are accepted by the South West Dementia Brain Bank for storage and subsequent use in dementia research. Witnessed informed consent is needed from the donor or, if he or she is not competent to give consent, from a close family member (in a so-called qualifying relationship).

  • Research programme

The tissue donated to South West Dementia Brain Bank underpins most of the work undertaken by the Dementia Research Group, which is a part of the University of Bristol. Tissue from the Brain Bank is also provided to many other research groups - in Bristol, elsewhere in the UK, and some research groups in other countries - to support a wide range of studies on the causes, disease mechanisms, diagnosis and potential for treatment of dementia.
