  • Research summary

Musculoskeletal Outpatient Physiotherapy for Redbridge is provided to patients in six clinics within the Borough. There is one clinic where 20% of clinical time is lost due to patients not attending appointments (the other five clinics average at 13% of time lost). The Physiotherapists within this clinic also work in other centres with good attendance rates. Therefore it is of value to investigate why one clinic has poor attendance rates compared to the other five.

It is known from the 2011 census that the community surrounding the clinic has a diverse cultural mix. An audit of the service in question has shown that the biggest group of patients who fail to complete their treatment (40%) define their religion as Muslim with recorded ethnicities of Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Asian and Indian.

This study aims to identify patients who are South Asian and have been referred to the study clinic and interview them to understand their experiences and expectations of Physiotherapy.

Prior to the interviews the researcher (the student Marie Loizides) will contact relevant community groups to ensure an in-depth understanding of the culture and ethnicity of the patients who are to be approached for the study. This information will ensure all interviews are conducted in a culturally sensitive manner.
Interviews will be conducted with interpreters where necessary and analysis of the interviews will be completed to identify factors that contribute to successful treatment or non-attendance of appointments. This will be used in future service development to ensure the needs of this group of patients are met.
