Research summary
Forensic mental health service users are under the care of a multi-disciplinary team of medical, nursing, psychology, occupational therapy and social work practitioners. The context is dominated by the medical model therefore I will be undertaking research to find out to what extent are mental health social workers able to assert their social work identity and values in forensic mental health settings.
I would like to conduct semi-structured, one hour interviews with 4-5 forensic mental health social workers along with 4-5 forensic professionals from other disciplines (occupational therapists, psychologists, doctors and nurses) to explore their experiences, or perceptions, of social work identity and values within forensic mental health settings.
It is hoped that the research could contribute to:
Promoting the work of social workers in multi-disciplinary team working in forensic settings;
Supporting social workers in forensic settings to assert their social work identity and values;
Supporting non-social work professionals to understand the role of social workers in forensic settings.
