Research summary
The current study primarily aims to explore whether there are any differences in the occurrence and severity of social anxiety disorder (SAD) between transgender males and transgender females within a Gender Identity Clinic in Northamptonshire, UK. Secondly, it aims to explore the occurrence of SAD in transgender people attending a specialist gender dysphoria clinic and how this may compare to their cis-gender counterparts. Thirdly, we aim to explore there are any gender differences in the cognitive and behavioural processes understood to maintain SAD in transgender males and females. Lastly, we aim to explore any possible differences in the clinical presentation of SAD that may be specific to transgender individuals, with both quantitative measures (i.e. proximal stressors of internalised transphobia, negative expectations and non-disclosure/concealment) and qualitative measures.
