Research summary
In response to national recommendations for the identification and treatment of tobacco dependence in young people with mental health problems, this study will investigate the knowledge and attitudes of young people aged 12-18 years with mental health problems and their that of their parents towards smoking and its treatment. Young people accessing specialist (Tier 3/4) Child and Adolescent Mental Health services (CAMHS) provided by Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust and their parents will be invited to attend an interview and complete a survey respectively.
A total of up to 15 young people will be enrolled into the study as interview participants and 15 parents will be enrolled as members of a focus group.
The study aims to identify opportunities and barriers for interventions in smoking cessation/reduction in this hard to reach group. The results of this study will be used to provide a solid evidence base for a wider NIHR application.
