Research summary
Individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) are at increased risk for many cancers although the link between T2D and cancer is currently not well understood. Diabetics face unique challenges with quitting smoking (smoking cessation) and often have other treatment management and lifestyle changes to make. Smoking cessation reduces cancer-related morbidity and mortality in this high-risk and growing population.
The researchers will pilot an intervention program for type 2 diabetic smokers, offering them financial incentives to quit. We will also explore the feasibility of delivering this intervention which will provide important information for a larger scale study.
