Research summary
There are no major breakthroughs on the horizon in the field of pharmacotherapy or psychotherapy for the treatment of depression. No recognised treatments have the potential for rapid treatment of depression (in one week) without any significant side effects. Triple chronotherapy is a term used to describe a combination of total sleep deprivation, followed by advance of sleep cycle and bright light therapy over 1 week. Three small controlled trials suggest that this is a promising treatment for the rapid treatment of depression. We are therefore conducting a feasibility study to determine rate of recruitment and adherence to the treatment and protocol in depressed out patients. We will explore whether adding Triple Chronotherapy to treatment as usual is of potential benefit in the rapid treatment of depression after 1 week.
