Research summary
The proposed study would address the primary research aim: to explore if sleep disturbances (duration, efficiency, wake after sleep onset and onset latency) are related to suicidal ideation in First Episode Psychosis. Secondary aims include exploring if sleep disturbances are related to psychotic symptoms in FEP, and if psychotic symptoms are related to suicidal ideation in FEP.
In order to address the aim, the research proposes a cross sectional design where participants are asked to wear a wrist worn accelerometer that measures sleep for 7 days. The participants will also be asked to complete three questionnaires (one measuring insomnia symptoms, one measuring psychotic symptoms, and one measuring suicidal ideation) and take part in a brief interview exploring their experiences of sleep, psychotic symptoms, and suicidal thoughts. The benefit of a mixed methods design is that objective assessments of sleep are not common in FEP and will provide detailed data on the sleep cycle. The qualitative component will aim to add context to such potential associations by exploring the participants experience of sleep, symptoms and suicidal thoughts.REC name
