  • Research summary

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)is a condition that can affect many of the bodies organs and the skin. It can also affect the lower limb and feet causing joint and muscle pains.
Further, SLE can lead to problems with the blood flow to the lower limb and sometimes there are changes in the skin colour(known as Raynauds) and the way that nerves work leading to loss of sensation. All these factors may lead to thinning of the skin and breakdown of the tissues leading to ulceration. The medication for SLE may also impact on the person’s resistance to infections such as fungal, bacterial and viral. Although there is some evidence for these problems occurring, it is not known how prevalent they are, what interaction there is between problems , and how these problems impact on the person’s quality of life. Further, it is not known if people with foot problems access specialist care through foot health services.

The aim of this study is to carry out a survey using a questionnaire to gather data on patients reported lower limb and foot problems. A selection of the participants will then be interviewed to ascertain the impact of foot and lower limb problems on their lives. It is anticipated that this research will provide the baseline information required to carry out further research. Ultimately the results could help identify to what extent dedicated foot health services for people with SLE related foot and lower limb problems is warranted in order to improve their quality of life.
