Research summary
This study aims to show that a particular feature of shoulder anatomy seen on x-ray can be used as a tool to help predict whether someone has a degenerative tear in their rotator cuff muscles. We have observed that patients with rotator cuff tears often display a sharpened lateral acromion morphology (termed SLAM lesion) in their shoulder x-rays. The objective of this study is to confirm that the SLAM lesion is indeed more common in the x-rays of patients who have been proven to have rotator cuff tears than those without. We also aim to find out how effective the SLAM lesion is compared to other similar diagnostic features (such as CSA and Type III Acromion) in predicting whether someone has a rotator cuff tear based on their x-ray appearance. This will be done by looking back through existing x-rays in two groups of patients, one group who are known to have rotator cuff tears (proven during surgery on their shoulder) and another group who are known to have intact rotator cuffs.
