  • Research summary

To support cancer survivors effectively we must understand their needs and patterns of recovery. We do not currently have information on this from lung cancer patients who undergo surgery by Single-Port Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (SP-VATS) . SP-VATS has been introduced into the UK in the last five years and is associated with equivalent outcomes in terms of safety, early postoperative pain and quality of the surgery offered. \n\nDespite apparent equivalence in the clinical outcomes measured, we do not have sufficient knowledge about the longer term recovery of patients undergoing SP-VATS for Lung Cancer resection. We have previously conducted a study investigating the feasibility of collecting routinely PROMS in patients undergoing surgery for curative intent. (Foster, C., Calman, L., Foster, R., Richardson, A., Smith, P., Baird, J., Beaver, K and Edwards, J.G. (2014) Testing the feasibility of establishing a cohort of lung cancer patients to investigate recovery following surgery with curative intent. Lung Cancer, 83 (1). S78. ISSN 01695002)\n\n\n\nWe wish to study the PROMs of patients undergoing SP-VATS for lung cancer resection, compared to those undergoing either multiport VATS or thoracotomy, in an observational cohort study. We will invite them to complete standard quality of life questionnaires at 5 timepoints: pre op, 2 weeks post op, 5 weeks post op, 3 months and 6 months post op.\n
