Research summary
Finding methods to help women manage and cope with anxiety and depression during pregnancy is a needed direction within research. Music has great promise as being a widely available, inexpensive and non-stigmatizing intervention to help women that are suffering from mild to moderate depression and anxiety during the antenatal period. The proposed study will be investigating how listening to specially composed songs, or taking part in a singing group might help reduce anxiety and depression in pregnant women and its potential sub sequential effects on the infants’ behavioural and cognitive development. Participants will be recruited from Whittington Hospital in London. Mothers’ progress through the pregnancy period will be evaluated using a number of measures, both quantitative and qualitative. Infants will be evaluated using measures of cognitive and behavioural development.
