Research summary
There is little understanding of the individual and social influences involved in the everyday life experiences of those with persistent musculoskeletal pain which may act as obstacles to recovery, and ultimately, work participation. We are proposing to conduct an in-depth examination of the beliefs and behaviour of the ‘significant others' of those with persistent musculoskeletal pain to explore how they may influence patient beliefs and behaviour. Ultimately, this information will provide a useful insight into the under-researched social factors that influence persistent musculoskeletal pain, and meaningfully inform future treatment plans and self-management programmes aimed at improving patient outcome.
