Research summary
Public Health England have reported that the number of people attending hospital suffering a myocardial infarction has halved since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, equating to 5,000 patients. Some will have already died but others will suffer ongoing complications of delayed/missed treatment. However, local data demonstrates that these reductions are consistent across a number of cardiac populations, including those with heart failure and abnormal heart rhythms.
In an attempt to understand people's decision making during an acute cardiac event, we intend to recruit 30 patients (and a family member if they were involved in the decision making) across four sites in Liverpool, Oxford and London and invite them to participate in individual semi structured interviews. These interviews will be undertaken either by telephone or by video conferencing.
The results of this study will help us to target our public health messages during future pandemics.
