Research summary
The Care Quality Commission (2016) notes that the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust(RBCH) has enacted a number of actions to improve the care for people with dementia. The research will use a qualitative approach to answer the following question: How can we improve acute hospital care for people with dementia and their carers?
This research question will be answered with the use of interviews and observations. This aspect of the study will recruit approximately five patients, five carers and five staff (nursing, medical, allied healthcare professionals, domestics). The interviews and observations are constructed to elicit the following: 1) What aspects of patients/carers/staff interactions promote or hinder patients/carers/staff concerns (regarding your health, care, treatment etc.)? 2) What aspects of the environment promote or hinder patients/carers/staff concerns (regarding your health, care, treatment etc.)? 3) What aspects of hospital equipment promote or hinder your concerns (regarding your health, care, treatment etc.)? 4) What aspects of hospital policies promote or hinder your concerns (regarding your health, care, treatment etc.)? These four questions are informed through the work of: Edwards (1972), Hawkins (1987) and Zecevic, Salmoni, Lewko, and Vandervoort (2007). These authors have informed the questions by giving us a framework which looks at individuals within the hospital system. The analysis of data from the interview and observations will be guided by the work of Atun (2012) and Reason (1997). Therefore, what is the role of organisational factors, education and policy in shaping participants experiences?REC name
