Research summary
The SHIPS Study will follow-up a cohort of children born very preterm (before 32 weeks of gestation) at 5-6 years of age. This comprises two studies:
In Study 1, parents of children born at 28 to 32 weeks gestation will be asked to complete a questionnaire to obtain information about their child’s health and development, the care they have received since discharge from hospital and parents’ experiences of this.
In study 2, children born before 28 weeks gestation will be asked to complete the study questionnaire as in Study 2, but children will also be offered a formal developmental assessment.
The aims of the SHIPS Studies are to:
1. Survey and describe existing screening and prevention follow-up programmes for very preterm children in European regions in terms of their structure, organisation, financing, follow-up period, clinical processes and content.
2. Explore the performance of these screening programmes in relation to the uptake of programmes by eligible families; use of preventive and early intervention services; time of diagnosis and treatment of health problems; care coordination and avoidance of unnecessary hospitalisations and emergency visits; the health, neurodevelopment and health-related quality of life of very preterm children at 5 years of age; family satisfaction and parental concerns and distress; and resource use and costs.
3. Identify the attributes of successful programmes at a population-level as determined by population coverage, equity of care and cost-effectiveness.
4. Generate new knowledge about the use of screening tools and assessments at 2 years for outcomes at 5 years of age from follow-up of a 2011 birth cohort of very preterm infants with broad geographic representation.
5. Develop and disseminate European guidelines for follow-up screening and prevention programmes for very preterm infants based on the project’s results with input from clinicians, researchers, policy-makers, representatives of user groups and families.REC name
