Research summary
Shared Decision-Making (SDM) is increasing expected in all aspects of patient care including in the acute setting. Treatment Escalation Planning (TEP) is one aspect of decision-making taking place in the acute medical setting, which is designed to pre-empt deterioration and define a contingency plan for medical treatment. This will be an observational study taking place in the acute hospital setting using rapid ethnography methodology. We aim to describe how decision-making conversations, including TEP conversations, take place between older patients and clinicians in the acute hospital setting and the factors influencing these conversations. This research will increase our understanding of current practice around decision-making between patients and clinicians.
