  • Research summary

    WHY IS THIS STUDY IMPORTANT?
Shared decision-making is a process that aims to support patients to make decisions that are right for them. It can and should feasibly be used with every patient contact, however, it is apparent that clinician-led decisions about treatment still dominate in the NHS. One clinical presentation where the research evidence is equivocal is displaced collarbone injuries which represent approximately 10% of all injuries to the shoulder. Management of displaced collarbone injuries could include wait-and-see, physiotherapy, and/ or surgery to stabilise the displaced collarbone, but there is uncertainty about the optimal treatment of these injuries and often the treatment pathway is dictated by the professional background and preference of the treating clinician.

WHAT IS THE AIM OF THE STUDY?
This interview study will explore the use of Shared decision-making in this clinical context as the first step in a programme of research aiming to optimise the use of Shared decision-making for patients with displaced collarbone injuries.

HOW WILL THE STUDY BE DESIGNED?
A convenience sample of 10-12 participants with a displaced collarbone injury, where surgical and non surgical treatment options are viable, from 4 NHS Trust’s will be recruited. Participants will be eligible for recruitment to the study if, during the course of their usual NHS treatment, they fulfil the following clinical criteria:
    - Any adult (over the age of 18) with a displaced collarbone injury
    - Have had a plain film x-ray, (preferably AP and axial views) to diagnose the displaced collarbone injury
    - Can communicate in English
Participants will undergo a telephone interview conducted by the CI exploring their experiences of shared decision-making in the management of their collarbone injury.
