Research summary
Shared decision making (SDM) is a collaborative process that supports a person and their healthcare professional to work together to reach a joint decision about treatments, after a discussion about the benefits and harms of treatment and the person's individual preferences. There are very few studies looking at shared decision making and infection management in hospitals, and of what there is suggests that there is very little evidence of SDM with patients. This study will explore what opportunities there might be for shared antibiotic prescribing decision making between patients and healthcare professionals in hospitals. We will interview patients recently discharged from three hospitals in England who were prescribed antibiotics during their stay and also interview senior doctors working at those hospitals to explore what information is discussed about the infection being treated and where we might be able to facilitate shared decision making in the future.
