Research summary
This study will explore the lived experience of family members of people with intellectual disability (ID) charged with a sexual offence (SO). This research aims to provide a voice to these families by exploring their lived experience, the emotional impact, the impact on the relationship with their relative with ID charged with a SO and their view of accessing support from health and social care.
It is hoped that between 6 - 10 participants will be recruited for this study. Participants will be family members of patients that are supported by an NHS community forensic learning disability service and who have been charged with a sexual offence. Informed consent will be provided before participants are invited to an hour-long interview regarding their experience. The interview will take place at an NHS clinic space or remotely via telephone or video call. The project is a qualitative design (using interpretative phenomenological analysis) meaning that the research will transcribe and analyses the themes presented in the interviews. The findings of this study will be published in academic journals in order to contribute to the current limited research on the topic.
