  • Research summary

The consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on what sexual health and blood borne virus (SHBBV) services have been able to be accessed, and what services they have been able to offer, is still being understood two years on since the Scottish Government declared the beginning of the pandemic. For people with a need to access one of these services, changes in what and how these can be engaged with has changed dramatically. HIV Scotland wants to implement an online questionnaire to explore and understand what services have been accessed and what has been delivered.
Building on findings from literature documenting a significant reduction in face-to-face services in the beginning of the pandemic (2020) and more recent evidence documenting a growth in digital and online services supplementing the limited face-to-face engagement, we want our online questionnaire to focus one the experiences of people in Scotland as these relate to the past year (June 2021 – June 2022) to see what has been accessed, how, and by whom as we move to ‘living with’ COVID-19.
Through this questionnaire, a deeper understanding of those who have accessed SHBBV services by focusing on how people perceive their ability to ‘bounce back’ from adversity (i.e, the COVID-19 pandemic) can be explored. We will do this by measuring perceived resilience. Owing to the fact patient experiences should inform the future, we want to use explore these perceptions and experiences and understand what types of services in the future could be acceptable as we move beyond the pandemic.
A range of key populations have contributed to the study design and the development of the survey instrument and will continue to be involved in all stages of the work. Data from this study will provide information on the current landscape of SHBBV services and perceptions of them and how these are meeting the needs of people living in Scotland.
