Research summary
We want to study the relationship between exercise and chronic venous outflow obstruction secondary to post thrombotic syndrome. We know that many patients are limited in their daily activities by their symptoms. This can be due to pain in their legs or shortness of breath. Other work has shown that exercise can improve some of the symptoms associated with chronic venous outflow obstruction and post thrombotic syndrome. We also know that in patients with disease of the arteries (the blood vessel that carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body) exercise can be just as effective as having a stent procedure.
The primary aim of this study is to see if a remotely delivered smartphone-based exercise programme is effective at reducing these symptoms in venous patients and improving a person’s ability to exercise. We want to know if exercise is as effective as having a stent procedure.
We are also interested in whether exercise improves the results for patients who have had stents such as preventing them from becoming blocked in the future. We hope to be able to predict which patients will benefit from stenting.
