  • Research summary

This application is related to phase 2 of a study which is undertaken to fulfil the requirement of a Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD) at the University of Wolverhampton (the sponsor).
Phase 1 was to gain the sponsor approval (expression of interest) to start the planning for a professional doctorate offered to registered pharmacists in the UK in advanced clinical pharmacy services which is suitable for all pharmacy stetting: community, primary care and hospital (including independent prescribing).
Phase 2 is aiming to gage services users’ opinion on the current independent prescribers’ pharmacists’ model and the gaps in knowledge or skills that the new degree should address. They will be asked about the current independent prescribing education, how it prepared them for this role and the possibility of implementing independent prescribing services in community pharmacies with extended opening hours. The new concept Is covered under research auspice until it is evaluated. This is the same approach to that adopted during the introduction of independent pharmacists prescribing services.
Phase 3 will be informed by the feedback received in phase 2, which will generate a business case submitted to the sponsor for course registration. In this phase the Professional Doctorate programme content will be developed, aiming to produce pharmacists who are able to deliver clinical services including triage, differential diagnosis, identification of red flags and sign-‐posting.
Pharmacists participants will be invited by the researcher and provided with an information sheet which will provide them with full details about the study and a link to an online questionnaire. Participants general practitioners and patients will be invited by their enrolled independent prescribers’ pharmacists. The researchers will only receive anonymous online responses where each pharmacist, their GP and their patients have the same code which is generated by their pharmacists.
