  • Research summary

The proposed research project aims to examine service user experiences of engaging in collaborative HCR-20V3 risk assessment within a female medium secure rehabilitation ward.

Eligibility will be for female service users residing on Swift Medium Secure Rehabilitation Ward at Ridgeway Secure Services, Roseberry Park Hospital. All service users are over the age of 18, and are currently detained under the Mental Health Act, (1983, revised 2007). The ward psychiatrist will be approached prior to inviting service users to take part in the study, the ward psychiatrist will inform whether the individual has capacity to take part. Only service users deemed to have capacity by the ward Psychiatrist will be approached to take part in the study.

The research aims to contribute to the body of evidence around collaborative risk assessment and understanding service user's experiences of engaging in this. This research is informed by previous research articles, published reports and guidance from government bodies which recommend the implementation of collaboration and patient involvement within risk assessment. Although this has been recommended by a number of authors, professional bodies and professionals. There is still little evidence available that explores service users experiences of taking part in risk assessment collaboratively.

The study is expected to last twelve months in total, which will include discussing capacity with the consultant psychiatrist, informed consent process, qualitative interview, transcription of interview, qualitative data analysis and project write up. This research will be submitted as part of Stage 2 Qualification in Forensic Psychology (British Psychological Society).
