  • Research summary

The current study aims to explore potential links between leadership style, well-being and worklife qualities among staff working in secure in-patient settings. Research suggests staff well-being plays an important role in determining the quality of care experienced by service users within health services. A Servant leadership (SL) style has been described as a positive and pro-social approach, focused on the development of staff (Greenleaf, 1977). Characteristics of the work environment and a SL approach have both been linked to positive outcomes, including improved staff well-being and a more positive work environment (Eva, Robin, Sendjaya, van Dierendonck & Linden, 2019). Research findings suggest a SL approach, influences staff well-being indirectly by creating a more positive working environment (Eva et al., 2019).

Within the current study, it is expected that staff working under the supervision of a line manager perceived to have higher levels of SL qualities will report better psychological well-being and a more positive worklife environment.

Healthcare staff, working in secure in-patient settings from two mental health service providers will be invited to take part in the study. Those taking part will be asked to complete a questionnaire pack which will ask participants to rate their line manager’s leadership style, their own psychological well-being and perceptions of the quality of their work environment, along with some demographic information such as age, gender etc. Participants will complete either a paper or online version of the questionnaire pack which should take no longer than 20 minutes to complete.
