  • Research summary

When patients are infected, the inflammatory process produces various volatile molecules and gases. These include nitric oxide, hydrogen peroxide, and carbon monoxide. We have developed a new technique to continuously monitor the concentration of these substances in a gas stream. SENTRI will use this new device, a laser spectrometer, to monitor the exhaled gas from the ventilator breathing system of patients ventilated for elective operations to establish a normal range, and patients ventilated on an intensive care unit. If the latter patients have or develop infection we expect to see a change in the investigated gas levels. The pattern of the changes may give an indication of the site and type of infection.
