Data collection arrangements
This application covers the data collected by the Sentinel Stroke National Audit Programme (SSNAP). SSNAP currently has support under ECC 6-02(FT3)/2012 for non-research purposes and a refreshed non-research application has been submitted alongside this research application. This research application is to seek support to allow the data collected for audit purposes to be used for wider research purposes. No additional data will be collected for the research database beyond what is already collected for SSNAP.
The audit has been designed to measure the processes of care for stroke patients who are admitted to hospital, from onset of symptoms up to 6 months post-discharge from hospital. Data on key pre-hospital timings are also entered by ambulance trusts in England.
Data collection for the audit began in 2012 and is ongoing, with data collection currently running until 31 March 2026. Data is collected from stroke units and stroke care providers in England and Wales via a secure web-based application.
Holding patient identifiable information is critical to accuracy and reliability, to enable correct matching of individual patients between the audit data and other available datasets (such as HES), to confirm demographic details and ensure that analysis factors such as casemix are considered.Research programme
The aim of the research application is to support high quality research into the provision of stroke care and current standards of clinical practice; impact of the organisation of stroke services on care provision; impact of specific interventions on outcomes; development and impact of new technologies; among many others, all in turn allowing this knowledge to be used to improve stroke care provision. Research will be undertaken within the field of stroke, or more broadly cardiovascular diseases. The types of organisations requesting this data for research could include NHS healthcare providers, academic institutions, healthcare regulators, other healthcare bodies, local authorities, and commercial bodies. The overall aim of SSNAP is to provide timely information to clinicians, commissioners, patients and the public on how well stroke care is being delivered. This information is used as a tool to improve the quality of care that is provided to patients. There is massive potential in using SSNAP data in research to support the audit's aim of improving the quality of care for people with stroke.
