Research summary
The Twins UK study is a registry of over 12000 Twins, who have been recruited and followed up for over the past 20 years. The registry contains very extensive medical, genetic and behavioural information to allow the study of the effects of genetic and environmental factors on health and disease.\nUp until now, very little information has been collected from these people regarding their oral health. A number of questions have been reported in previous studies that may usefully identify the presence of oral disease with variable accuracy. Current Twins assessments have thus incorporated these self reported measures of oral disease into a questionnaire and are also taking a Saliva sample. However it is still required to show that the answers to this questionnaire do give a reliable assessment of subjects’ oral health.\nTherefore in this study we aim to test the validity of the oral health assessment questionnaire by recruiting some of the patients who have filled out the questionnaire, and carrying out a full dental examination to confirm their oral health. \nIn the long term this study offers the prospect of being able to obtain valid oral health data from the entire TwinsUK cohort, allowing a wide range of questions regarding the genetics of oral disease and interactions between dental and other disease to be studied in depth.\n\n
