Research summary
BACKGROUND
Acute cholecystitis accounts for 20% of Emergency General Surgical admissions. The concept of seasonal variation is still a new and developing concept in surgical literature.
Whether acute cholecystitis which accounts for one fifth of surgical emergency admissions also follows a seasonal trend is not yet established.Better understanding of the relationship between seasons and occurrence of acute cholecystitis will assist health care administrators and planners in predicting the demand for hospital resources and arrange for backup personnel during the peak season towards distributing limited health care resources and optimizing patient care.
The seasonal trend of acute cholecystitis has not been looked up much in the UK and given the struggle healthcare system is facing towards resource as well as staff allocation to deliver best possible patient care we think this may be a step forward to predict our demand of resources seasonally and make appropriate arrangements ahead of time.
