Research summary
The research question: How is the decision-making process in outpatient consultations with their physician perceived by women with SUI?
Consecutive patients, who visit the outpatient clinic for the first time for their SUI and for whom physiotherapy was insufficient, will be included. Patients will be surveyed before the consultation, establishing their preferred style of decision-making (using the control preference scale (CPS)). Patients included in the qualitative part will be interviewed after this survey, covering women’s expectations of their UI, aspects they deem important in making a decision and their hopes regarding the decision-making style of their physician. Next, the consultation with the gynaecologist will be audio-recorded. the major decision (the choice of treatment) will be scored with the OPTION-5 instrument. Then, patients will be surveyed immediately after the consultation and, when included in the qualitative part, be interviewed again.
Physicians will also be asked how they perceived their own decision-making process. The degree of similarity between the outcomes of the (modified) CPS-scores and the OPTION-5 scores will be analysed. Physicians will be interviewed regarding their SDM style in general. These interviews will cover their values and beliefs regarding their role in the decision-making process.REC name
