Research summary
The SCOT-HEART 2 trial, will recruit at least 6,000 people from Scotland who are at risk of heart disease and will compare two ways of deciding how to prevent future heart problems. It will compare the current standard of care, using a Scottish ‘risk score’ called ASSIGN, with a CTCA scan to look at the heart. This will help us find out if making decisions based on the results of a CTCA will stop too many people being given medicines they don’t really need, and see whether it lowers the number of people developing heart disease. Patients are randomly allocated to either receive a research scan or not when they enrol in the study.
We will invite participants to take part in an interview so we can explore the meaning participants attribute to the information in the results letters and clinical consultations as part of the SCOT-HEART 2 trial, and uncover what this means in terms of patient identity and understanding of the risk of heart disease. Using the COM-B model of behaviour change, we will explore how the components of capability, opportunity and motivation appear in participant accounts. This will provide valuable information into how using CTCA scanning as a risk screening tool can aid patients in understanding their cardiovascular risk profile and adopt lifestyle modification to either maintain or improve health.
We will also interview General Practitioners to understand their experience of caring for people informed of cardiovascular risk by ASSIGN score and CT scan.REC name
