  • Research summary

Examinations of the stomach and bowel are widely performed in the UK. The lifetime chance of requiring one of these tests is now greater than 1 in 3. High quality is essential to ensure that procedures are safe and that abnormalities are not missed. A positive experience of the test is important to ensure patients attend for their tests and any further tests required in the future. At present all the tools used to assess patient experience are written by healthcare professionals. Research has shown that there is a large variation between what doctors and nurses think is important to patients. It is increasingly recognized that designing questionnaires based on patient’s experiences rather than healthcare professionals perceptions leads to better quality tools to assess the experience.
This study aims to develop assessment tools to evaluate the patient experience of bowel investigations. This “patient reported experience measure” (PREM) will take the form of a questionnaire.
Any patient attending for an endoscopic investigation of the upper GI tract or an investigation of the large bowel (either a camera test or a CT scan) will be invited to take part in a discussion group (focus group) after the test to discuss their experience. These will be patients under investigation at South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust, and the focus groups will take place at the hospital.
We will also conduct interviews with staff members to find out what they feel patients find important.
Focus groups will be led by trained researchers. They will be audio recorded, anonymised, and then analysed to see what aspects of the tests matter most to patients. These results will then be used to develop a questionnaire. Patients will then be invited to test this initial questionnaire to help us refine the questions.
